Silk vs Satin: What Is the Difference?

Silk and satin are often spoken about as if they are the same thing, but they are not.

Silk is a natural fibre. It is made from silkworm cocoons and has been treasured for centuries for its beauty, breathability, and smooth finish. Satin, on the other hand, is a type of weave. It can be made from many different fibres, including polyester, nylon, or silk.

This means a product labelled “satin” may not contain any silk at all.

Many satin hair accessories are made from synthetic materials. They can look shiny, but they do not offer the same natural quality, feel, or breathability as pure mulberry silk.

At BlissSilk, we use 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk. It is chosen for its long fibres, smooth surface, and luxurious finish. For hair and skin, this matters. Silk feels gentle, helps reduce friction, and is naturally breathable.

If you are choosing a bonnet, turban, pillowcase, or scrub cap, it is worth checking what the fabric is actually made from. Not all shiny fabrics are silk.
